Gandhiji's picture was first printed on the note in the year 1969. The Reserve Bank then placed him on a note in his memory. The Sevagram Ashram in Maharashtra's Wardha district also had this picture behind him. Gandhi spent 14 important years of his life in this ashram. Both the government and the general public, however, did not want pictures of the British King printed on the notes. But the government needs some time for that. The government soon removed the image of the British King from the Indian currency and installed a picture of the Lion Capital in Sarnath.



When were the notes with Gandhiji's picture printed?

We have mentioned above that the Reserve Bank first printed a picture of Gandhiji on notes in 1969. At that time a 100 rupee note with a picture of Gandhiji was introduced. This was on the occasion of the centenary of Gandhiji's birth in 1869. This picture of Gandhiji was taken during his stay at Sevagram Ashram.

Gandhiji's smiling picture in notes these days, that picture was first printed on currency notes in 1987. The first 500 rupee note with a picture of Gandhiji was introduced in October 1987. Since then, a similar picture has been printed on other currency notes.

The Central Bank of India (RBI) made several changes to the banknotes in 1996. Watermark changed. In addition, security threads with windows, latent images and Intaglio features for the visually impaired were added. Now 5, 10, 20, 100, 500 and 1000 rupee notes have come into circulation with Gandhiji's picture. Meanwhile, the Ashoka Pillar has been replaced with a picture of Mahatma Gandhi and the national symbol Ashoka Pillar has been moved to the bottom left of the note. Since then, notes have been printed in this format.

Where is this picture of Gandhiji from?

The picture of Mahatma Gandhi printed on the notes was taken at the present Rashtrapati Bhavan i.e. the Viceroy's House in the year 1946, when Gandhiji reached Myanmar i.e. Burma and India to meet the then Secretary Frederick Pathik Lawrence. It was there that his picture was taken. No concrete information is available about who took the picture. However, the color of the new notes issued after the ban has changed a lot. But one thing that still exists is the smiling picture of Gandhiji.
